just keen to find out what else i will need when i buy a new nintendo wii?

You shold buy a few games, and a memory card for ya Wii is worth buying if you want to surf the internet get a 2GB card. The wii charging unit is very useful, wii remote batteries suddenly cease to work, often in the middle of action in a game and the remote stops play. Annoying if you don't have any spare AA at home.

(1st) super smash bros. brawl. all the characters from nintendos sonys xboxs snes can be played / unlocked in various battle modes.

if you'r talking hardware, get a wii motion plus adapater

one of the most useful extras to buy is a nintendo game called "wii play" that includes a free wii remote. not from ebay, some do have the remote missing

i found downloading games from the Wii channel necessary when my son didn't like the games we bought. since then we have just bought another nunchuk and joystick control for his wii. we should have purchased wii play in hindsight.
